My friend’s dad sent me an email about Jains being or becoming vegan. There are many reasons why Jains and others who are not religious or of the same faith, feel one should be vegan. That’s a debate for a different blog. 🙂 However, for those of you who are Jain follow a vegan lifestyle or are considering doing so, perhaps this group can help you.

Are you currently a vegetarian Jain and thinking about the vegan diet/lifestyle?
Are you looking for inspiration/advice/guidance to help propel you to a vegan diet/lifestyle?
Do you have any concerns about going vegan?
Are you already vegan and keen to help other members of the Jain community make the transition by sharing your experiences?

If the answer to any of the above is “yes”, then you’ll want to join Jain Vegans, which is a friendly, informal, inspiring and very supportive email group set up by Jains to help Jains on their journey.

Since its launch in March 2008, Jain Vegans has been embraced by its members, and a lot of useful information has been shared.

To find out more about this exciting email group, and to join it, please visit the home page at:

(A “vegan” diet/lifestyle is one which avoids ALL animal products, including items like animal milk (e.g. cow’s milk), yoghurt, paneer, ghee, butter, cheese, etc., and is increasingly being adopted by Jains to reduce their himsa footprint)

If you do become vegan….

Almonds are one good source of calcium, I believe almonds are highly regarded in Ayurvedic medicine.

A very good way of getting plenty of almonds to use ground almond, available everywhere; this is very versatile and can be used like parmesan, toppings, bakes, mixed in meals etc. etc., adds flavour and thickens, needs no cooking so can be used easily.

As mentioned, a varied plant diet is a sound basis.

Good luck!

Thanks for this Peter.

I’m sure it will help. I didn’t realise almonds were so versatile.

Here’s some info re staying well whilst following a veggie/vegan diet: –

This is a summary of what was said at London Vegan’s meeting. The following info has been provided by Mahersh: –

There were some very important messages:
– the importance of receiving a good intake of Omega-3 to reduce one’s
“Omega-6/Omega-3 ratio” from around 10/15-to-1 to around 4-to-1 or less. The speaker suggests freshly ground flax seeds are one of the best plant sources, and we should eat some daily.

– importance of receiving an adequate intake of vitamin B12, and why B12 is so important.

– plus other important point, all based on studies carried out over long periods of time on the health of people eating a vegetarian/vegan diet.

If you’d like to listen to the talk, it is the available at this link:

The title of the talk we listened to was “Optimal Vegetarian Nutrition” but there are four others there too.

Best wishes,
